There’s no better way to put on a happy face. These bright, bold shades will bring your make-up to life and your look bang up to date. And with prices starting at £1, it’s a trend we are happy to follow.
The new limited edition MAC and Wonder Woman Lipstick in Russian Red, £15, is bound to become a collector’s item for the packaging alone, never mind that it’s a perfect red shade as well. It’s also worth looking at MAC’s Peacocky collection, which has some fabulous red Kissable Lip Colours, including Love Peck Blackened, £16 (maccosmetics.co.uk).
Maybelline Superstay 24 Dual Ended Lip Colour, £8.99 (Boots), in Red Passion, is one of the best new reds around — for a really intense colour which does stay on. It’s a double-ended product — you apply the colour with the easy-to-use sponge tip applicator at one end, then turn it round to top your lips with balm to ensure they don’t look or feel dry.
We love the new Nars Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Happy Days, £17.50, which is easy to apply and leaves lips with a subtle gloss and a red/orange shade, without it being too overpowering. Nars Velvet Matte Lip Crayon, £17.50, in Pop Life, is a permanent fixture in my own make-up bag — a clear red that instantly coats lips with rich pigment and never fails (both from Space NK).
Peacock’s new light-up Glam Lip Glosses in Red or Pink, £3.50 (02920 270 222), and Glam Squeeze Lip Gloss, £2, are both zingy, bright colours and are fantastic value.
Rimmel Colour Show Off Lipstick in 500 Diva Red (a strong, fresh scarlet) or 620 Coral Queen (a vibrant coral), £5.99 each. The colour lasts up to eight hours and won’t come off on your coffee cup.
MUA Make-Up Academy Lipstick Shade 1, £1 (Superdrug), is a strong, true red. Our favourite budget range always delivers on colour, proving you can get the look without breaking the bank.
Barry M Lip Lacquer Crayons in Scarlett or Party Pink, £4.99 each (both Boots), are intense glossy crayons that glide on to lips to give a high-shine, lacquered finish. They are fun to use and give great colour — drawing on a smile will take you back to primary school.
By Terry Rouge Terrybly Lipstick, £30.50 (Space NK and spacenk.co.uk), is a new anti-ageing lipstick with ‘Lumlip technology’ which nourishes, hydrates and creates volume. Frenetic Vermilion (200) is our favourite shade.
Essential Colours Lipstick in Tangerine, £2.50 (Marks & Spencer or marksand spencer.com). Once again, M&S has delivered a new range of fashion shades which mean you can try a trend without spending a fortune.
The New Dior Addict Lipsticks in It Pink (bright pink), Red Carpet (bright red) and Tango (coral), £22 (020 7216 0216), are super shiny and tick all the boxes for colour and gloss. The first ever Dior product was a lipstick and this new collection, launching this month, is a real innovation. With 25 per cent less wax than a classic lipstick, it contains an innovative gel to provide intense plumping hydration.
Avon’s Ultra Colour Rich Mega Impact Lipstick in Charged Cherry, £5.50 (avon shop.co.uk), is a really good red.
This was a huge hit with singer Florence Welch at the Brits spa last year.
This year’s new shade, Avon’s Moisture Seduction Lipstick in Red Kiss, £8.50, looks set to be like a similar success story.
